How to Get More Steam Wishlists

Wishlists are most useful when they come from players who understand what your game is and want to hear about its release. A sustainable wishlist strategy therefore starts with positioning and qualified traffic rather than chasing a single promotional trick.

1. Make the reason to wishlist obvious

Players need a clear reason to remember the game. Lead with the strongest differentiator: the fantasy, mechanic, challenge, art direction, social hook, or combination that makes the project easy to describe.

If the store page feels generic, more traffic often produces more exits rather than more wishlists.

  • Strengthen the first capsule impression.
  • Show the core loop early in the trailer.
  • Use screenshots that prove the promise made by your copy.
  • Keep the short description concrete.

2. Send qualified traffic, not just more traffic

Look for audiences that already play adjacent games or care about the same genre and mechanics. Creator outreach, niche communities, Reddit, genre Discord servers, relevant press, social posts, and festival discovery can all work when the targeting is appropriate.

Measure visits and downstream actions by channel. If a source generates clicks but little engagement, adjust the audience or the message before scaling it.

3. Create repeatable campaign beats

A reveal, gameplay clip, demo, major feature, festival participation, release-date announcement, and launch trailer can each create a new reason to revisit promotion. Build a calendar so your game does not disappear between announcement and release.

Good campaign beats also make outreach easier because there is something new to discuss rather than simply asking people to wishlist the same page again.

4. Use the demo as a conversion tool

A strong demo can reduce uncertainty for players. Make sure it reaches the main appeal quickly, communicates controls clearly, and ends with a natural reminder that the full game is available to wishlist.

Collect feedback and improve both the demo and the store page when players repeatedly misunderstand the same feature or expectation.

5. Keep expectations realistic

No legitimate channel can guarantee a fixed number of wishlists or sales for every game. Genre demand, visual appeal, pricing expectations, store-page quality, timing, audience fit, and the game itself all affect results.

Use campaigns to learn which positioning and audiences work best, then invest more heavily in the channels that produce the strongest qualified response.
