Reddit Marketing for Indie Games
Reddit can be useful for game discovery, but it is not a generic advertising feed. Each community has its own interests, rules, tone, and tolerance for self-promotion. A good campaign starts by identifying where the game genuinely fits and creating content that makes sense in that context.
1. Choose communities by fit
Start with genre, mechanics, platform, art style, development topics, and comparable games. Read the rules and recent posts before planning content.
Large communities are not automatically better. A smaller subreddit with a strong match can produce more meaningful discussion than a broad audience with little interest in the game.
2. Create posts that stand on their own
A useful Reddit post should offer something even before the reader clicks: a strong gameplay clip, development story, technical insight, comparison, question, demo announcement, or interesting design decision.
Adapt the title and context to the community instead of copying the same promotional text across multiple subreddits.
3. Participate after publishing
Answer genuine questions, clarify mechanics, acknowledge criticism, and keep the conversation focused on the game or topic. The comment section is often where credibility is built.
Avoid manufactured engagement, artificial voting, or scripted praise. Those tactics can damage trust and do not create a durable audience.
4. Time posts around meaningful milestones
Demos, festivals, updates, major features, release dates, and launches give communities a clearer reason to care. Plan several distinct angles rather than exhausting the same announcement in one day.
5. Measure more than clicks
Track traffic, wishlists or conversions where available, but also review the quality of comments, questions, saves, creator interest, and repeated community engagement. These signals help refine both future Reddit posts and the broader positioning of the game.
